Lake Oahe

Stretching over 200 miles along the Missouri River, Lake Oahe offers excellent walleye, salmon, smallmouth bass, catfish, and pike fishing. The bays around Mobridge, Pollock, and Gettysburg are prime spots. The Standing Rock area also produces nice walleye and smallmouth.

Lake Sharpe

Lake Sharpe was formed by the Big Bend Dam on the Missouri River. It boasts good populations of walleye, catfish, smallmouth bass, trout, and salmon. The Lower Bad River inlet and North Shore recreation area are noted fishing hotspots.

Lake Francis Case

This large Missouri River reservoir contains walleye, catfish, smallmouth bass, crappie, and pike. Key fishing access points include Chamberlain, the mouth of the White River, and the Platte Creek inlet. The early spring months produce good walleye action.

Pactola Reservoir

Surrounded by pine forests in the Black Hills, Pactola Reservoir is stocked annually with rainbow trout and also has smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and crappie. Productive fishing areas include Gulches inlet and Sandy Beach.

Angostura Reservoir

Angostura Reservoir spans nearly 15,000 acres along the Cheyenne River. In addition to rainbow trout, it holds populations of walleye, smallmouth bass, crappie, and catfish. The Cottonwood Day Use area and Rock Creek inlet offer good shore fishing access.

Rivers

Missouri River

The “Mighty Mo” offers some of the state’s best catfish, walleye, and bass fishing as it winds through South Dakota. Notable access points include the James River, Lake Yankton, and the Standing Rock reservation shoreline.

Big Sioux River

Flowing south along the Iowa border, the Big Sioux River contains smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, walleye, and pike. Falls Park in Sioux Falls and the area below Akaska Dam are prime fishing spots.

Cheyenne River

Cutting through the north-central part of the state, the Cheyenne River harbors walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, and pike. Good shore fishing access is available near the US Highway 212 bridge crossing.

James River

The James River holds populations of walleye, catfish, crappie, and smallmouth bass as it flows into the Missouri. The section running through Huron and Mitchell offers abundant fishing opportunities.

Vermillion River

Beginning in northeast South Dakota, the Vermillion River is best known for its smallmouth bass, with opportunities to catch walleye and catfish as well. The river runs along the south and east edges of Vermillion where shore fishing is available.
